NPORS (National Plant Operators Registration Scheme) was established in 1992 and is one of the most widely recognised Accreditation Bodies across the Construction, Waste Management, Utilities, Industrial and Extractives Industries.
NPORS stands firm on the principles it was founded on; supporting industry, regulating training and testing, consistent improvement, equal opportunities and transparency about how they work. Since it’s beginnings, NPORS has continued to progress to be a trusted and recognised name in the industry, offering employers a credible training alternative.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed to provide candidates with the knowledge and technical skills needed to operator a Road Roller safety and productively.
What are the entry requirements?
In terms of technical ability, there are no requirements for you to have any level of experience in operating this category of plant. If you are wanting to gain a CSCS affiliated card to gain employment in the construction industry, you will be required to achieve a pass on the CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test for Operatives. If you are intending on operating outside of the construction industry, there are no prerequisites at all.
What is the duration of the N214 Road Roller course?
This depends on your current level of experience. If you are an experienced operator on this category of plant, You can achieve your NPORS card in 1 day. If you have some experience then you might want to consider doing some training days in preparation for test. If you are a novice then we would be looking at roughly 5 days training to get you up to the required standard.
Where does the N214 Road Roller course take place?
All courses for plant categories will need to be undertaken at your workplace. For this reason, you will be required to have a fit for purpose machine to do the training and testing on. We cover provide nationwide NPORS training through our network of approved instructors.
When will my NPORS ticket need renewing?
5 years for the NPORS Traditional Card and Blue card
2 years for the NPORS Red card (you will need to register for the appropriate NVQ within this time)
You can renew it by either sitting a multiple choice touch screen test at a Pearson Vue test centre

You will be taught the following:
- Main legal requirements under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998
- Basic legal requirements of employers and employees
- Relevant health and safety information within manufacturer user manuals
- Pre-start checks and identification of defects
- Maintenance requirements
- Environmental impacts and consequences
- Safe working loads
- Start up and cool down procedures
- Knowledge and understanding of materials
- How to prepare the machine for use
- How to operate the machine safely and effectively
- PPE requirements
- Key functionality of the machine
- How to carry out task specific activities such as compacting materials and travelling
How will I be assessed?
Once you are at the required standard, Your instructor will carry out a theory test and practical test for you to demonstrate your new found competencies.
